Professor emeritus i naturfagdidaktikk ved Universitetet i Oslo. Æresprofessor ved Department of Science Education, Universitetet i København og ved Hong Kong Institute of Education. Professor II ved Universitetet i Bergen (2000-2005), ved Universitetet i Tromsø (2005-08) ved Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus (2010 — ) Visiting professor ved Södertörns Högskola og Universitetet i Linköping (2013-14).

Utdannet som kjernefysiker (cand. real, UiO, 1970), senere også i pedagogikk (MA. in education, Leeds University 1975) Dr. philos UiO 1982). Har sittet i fagplangrupper og har skrevet lærebøker for ulike nivåer, fra grunnskole til universitet. Har to ganger fått H.M Kong Olav’s gullmedalje for vitenskapelige avhandlinger.

Har i en årrekke arbeidet internasjonalt og har en rekke verv. Styremedlem av IOSTE (International Organization for Science and Technology Education (President i perioden 2002-04). Member of the Advisory Group on the Science and Society action plan of the 6th Framework Programme of the EU FP6 (2002-06). Æresdoktor ved Linköping Universitet i Sverige. 2004. Tildelt the “International price for outstanding contribution to physics education” av ICPE (International Committee for Physics Education), en sub-group av IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) i 2005. Ble tildelt Kaskelot-prisen for innsats for skolens naturfag av det danske Biologforbundet i 2008. Ble tildelt Formidlingsprisen ved Universitetet i Oslo i 2013.

Innvalgt medlem Norsk Teknisk Vitenskapsakademi (NTVA) (2004) og i Det Norske Videnskapsakademi (2009). Medlem av ICSUs ekspertkomite for utdanning i 2009. (ICSU: International Council for Scientific Unions, den internasjonale sammenslutningen for alle lands forskerorganisasjoner).

Nåværende forskningsinteresser: Sosiale, kulturelle og etiske aspekter ved naturfag i skole og samfunn. Naturfag og kjønn, naturfag i utviklingsland. Internasjonalisering, globalisering og norsk utdanningspolitikk, spesielt knyttet til realfag.

Omfattende formidlingsvirksomhet gjennom dagsaviser, tidsskrift, radio, TV samt foredrag for ulike målgrupper, både i Norge og en rekke andre land.

Har ledet to større internasjonale studier knyttet til barn og ungdoms forhold til naturfag: SAS (Science And Scientists) og ROSE (The Relevance of Science Education (2002 —)

Brief CV
Svein Sjøberg is professor emeritus in science education at Oslo University. Educated as a nuclear physicist (cand. real, Oslo University, 1970), later also in education (MA. in education, Leeds University 1975, dr. philos, Oslo University 1982). Has been involved in curriculum reforms and the writing of textbooks for all levels. Has twice won H.M King Olav’s gold medal for scientific dissertations, both later published as books. Research in cognitive development in science, gender and science education and international comparative research. National Research coordinator for Norway for SISS (Second International Science Study), the predecessor of the current TIMSS-study. Svein is Honorary professor at the Department of Science Education, Copenhagen University and Hong Kong Institute of Education. “Professor II”: Universitetet in Bergen (2000-2005), Universitetet in Tromsø (2005-08) Oslo and Akershus University College (2010 — 2014 ), and Visiting professor, Södertörn University, Sweden (2013-2014 ) and Linköping University, Sweden (2013-2014)

Svein has been involved in expert committees on science education for national institutions and research councils in several countries as well for UNESCO, OECD, The European Commission, ICSU (International Council of Science), the Wellcome Trust, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Nuffield Foundation etc..

Svein was board member of IOSTE (International Organization for Science and Technology Education) since 1994 (President 2002-04) and Member of the Advisory Group on the Science and Society action plan of the 6th Framework Programme of the EU FP6 (2002-06).

Has been awarded several national and international prices and awards for his research and outreach activities, i.e. the “International price for outstanding contribution to physics education” by ICPE (International Committee for Physics Education), a sub-group of IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) in 2005. Svein is elected member of The Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (2004) and The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2009)

Current research interests: Social, cultural and ethical aspects of science education and public understanding of science, science education and development, gender and science education and science education in developing countries. Svein has been organizer of two comparative projects on pupils’ interests, attitudes, perceptions etc. of importance to science teaching and learning: SAS (Science And Scientists) and ROSE (The Relevance of Science Education (2002 —).
